The project stems out of a premise that the permanence of architecture is currently in a state of crisis in this information age. The spatial and material infrastructure of society has decoupled from their social utility. While the space and the resources of the city have remained static, the way in which we use them has become quite dynamic and fluid. The various disciplines that address the built environment have not adequately addressed this issue. Recently, firms in the Silicon Valley have proposed a number of new models for the dynamic relationship between private resources and public use. We find prominent examples in the various manifestations of so-called sharing economy. Emerging models of creative usage of limited resources such as airbnb, WeWork and CitiBike have disrupted the idea of shared public resource, and they have radically altered the way in which we understand the public usage. This thesis seeks to investigate a dynamic approach to the allocation of public resources while resisting the transformation of the civic into a privatized service.
In terms of construction method in dynamic context, these are great examples for temporal architecture. The membrane structure is a primary case study by Frei Otto, but this method of construction is limited to rigorous scaffolding to achieve the geometry. Also, the analysis of geometry and cutting pattern are much harder to predict than the regular shape of buildings. The heat active sheet, so called shrink wrap, is transformed or shrunk by heat. There are precedents to use the heat active sheets in packaging system in large scale forms, as a boat coverage during the winter and also a building coverage in a construction site. The thesis takes advantage of heat active and recyclable coverage system to set the mode of dynamically responsive architectural uses.
A series of method of specific making process is a center study of this project to accommodate changes of space function and efficient construction process. Displacement and inter-connectivity of architectural elements create a scaffolding system, heat response-deflatable surface tightens a negative tension force, and the reciprocity generates a system of operation. The initial research is departed from material research and computation. The research includes from studies on material properties to investigation of material behavior in order to apply the result to key of design component.
There is a very old model for sharing economy that is a sharing books. The proposed architecture system between temporary and permanent allows for an application of outdated operating system of civic institutions, in this case, a library. The benefit of library is not only a giving a book sharing service, but also a providing civic space. A proposed micro branches of San Francisco Public Library with adaptable system responds to the programmatic diversity to serve as a civic platform, being able to respond to true dynamic of the city through system of construction.
The main building and branches of San Francisco Public Library are equally distributed by neighborhood area. However, it has not reflected the real dynamic of people and human because it is only based on sedentary population which is inadequate for the current dynamic city, resulting in a big missing area in downtown of San Francisco. On the other hand, the downtown has a unique policy of private owned public open space with diverse space typology including outdoor plaza, pedestrian walkways, roof terrace, indoor garden and snippet, but they are not in active use due to the lack of operational program. Therefore, the application of the thesis is to re-inject micro branches of public library into the private owned public open space in downtown of San Francisco through a method of adaptable making system.
TAIPEI POP MUSIC CENTER
The site consists of unused railroad park and one of block of middle density area. New pop music center compresses in urban section by expending its functions rather than consuming park area.
Redistribution of program
The Lifted multiple plateaus from semi-open flexible performing spaces for diverse performances and cultural activities. The platforms condensed serving program such as back of house and assembly room facilitate operations of the lifted plateaus in both up and down side.
Phase1. Lifted volume can be located and extruded to certain direction to optimise view from the adjacent park and green area.
Phase2. The Lifted multiple plateaus from semi-open flexible performing spaces for diverse performances and cultural activities. The platforms condensed serving program such as back of house and assembly room facilitate operations of the lifted plateaus in both up and down side.
Phase3. The music center’s modulized facade system help daylight control base on the each program. Exhibition space use the smallest control panel while office area takes advantage of the largest panel to obtain the natural light.
Phase4. The cores plays a role in not only structural supporting three platforms, but also facilitating circulation to the upper plat forms. Through this synthetic role, both interior and exterior performance space free from the column grid.
The 12 numbers of frames were made in other to regulate quantity of sunshine, which save energy of building. This the system attaches frame to skin, building not only saves energy, but also serves as great source of design.
12m height limitation - Historical value The site is directly adjacent to Gyung-Bok palace, which was place for Cho sun kingdom, and to surrounded from culturally-significant area by utilitarian construction which adversely impacted the historical inner-urban synergy.
Buck chon artpolis - Regional value Buck chon has become famous of the center for art and craft, having numerous art industry, gallery, and pop-up store since 1970. As a result, new suggested museum in this district considers original context and new functional museum simultaneously.
Consolidation Program Original site art-releted program is incorporated into new art museum. Traditional Exhibition space is limited to public access for security.
Extended Art-scape into art museum + Floating Exhibition platform Traditional exhibition space is elevated to provide underground art valley. In addition, The museum access is prolonged from each original context.
Art valley Ground floor is open public area and urban valley that forms a market place for art related activities on all scope. Physically it is open to surrounding urban fabric. The urban pattern of Buk-Chon District continues into the site as public spaces and forms the urban art-scape. Audience can freely move down to the urban valley to enjoy variety of art-related activities and exhibitions. Functions of the lower area consist of social activities of art such as production, trading, storage, research, conference, and digital media exhibition. They are organized along the urban valley according to the affinity to the public access. This semi open urban zones supports outdoor events like art fairs and festivals, while linking different functions of space along with it.
Contemporary Art works In contrast to traditional fine art piece, Contemporary art works tend to be larger and larger to give more impress to the audience. New museum should consider this tendency to meet the ceiling height.
Growing to down side It is necessary to secure ceiling height for contemporary art pieces. However, Overall site is limited to 12m building height because of preservation of cultural property. Under the limitation, The Museum is growing down to the underground.
Volatile exhibition space New museum can accommodate all type of art works through variety ceiling height. In addition, Audience can appreciate the art works at divers view point along with not only horizontal but also vertical variations.
Flexible platform The floating mass contains exhibition space and it is lifted above the ground to create the public open space in the ground level. It maximizes flexibility for interior configuration except the core and light wells as the fixed elements. Audience can create their own circulation as he/she navigate through the experience of the exhibitions and all space can be modified as the number and size of exhibition.
Camouflage The skin design is originated from Korean traditional wall system. To balance between old and new, the wall elevation design brings the converted sharp of stone wall with out stone. This open elevation system plays a role in obtaining daylight and ventilation, remaining historical homage.
Elevation Detail Studies Each Elevation can be produced by cast concrete and it will serve as controlling the sunlight for exhibition space.
The San Francisco Bay Area is an incredibly diverse cultural and social landscape, and, at the same time, one of the most complex ecology systems in North America. The effects of hydraulic mining in the 19th century and the reshaping of the water’s edge due to bay fill throughout the 20th century make the San Francisco Bay a prime example of the fragile relationship between cities and the larger ecologies that support them. This project re-examine this relationship, to question whether the bay can also be a new vessel, a new kind of relationship between cities and ecologies; one that emphasizes the reciprocal nature of the relationship between urban civilization and the natural wild.
The pre-existing conditions of the site vary significantly, including protected wetlands, abandoned military complexes, as well as outdated university research facilities. The site is isolated by four different barriers and suffers from environmental issues such as rising sea levels and contamination. Although there are protected areas, these spaces provide minimal use for people and are under immediate threat from rising water levels. This project proposes a new city structure, which embraces predicted water rise, and creates a dynamic landscape activated tidal changes.
To embrace the changing natural system and existing Richmond site context, this project introduces the concept of an ‘eco-bowl.’ The eco-bowls are an undulating surface system which accommodate not only everyday human activities, primarily a new system of “urban” transportation, but also act as a natural home for local flora and fauna. The eco-bowls are situated across the site, and in their ecological embrace have an influence on the greater San Francisco-Bay Area.
This project establishes a ‘slow’ city infrastructure with three different network systems. The evenly fragmented pedestrian network is the main circulation of the city, and often offers the most direct route within the city, thus encouraging people to get around via walking or riding a bicycle. Second, an extensive water-based public transportation system serves as both a local and global network to the San Francisco-Bay Area. These two systems undermine the automobile as the primary means of transportation, encouraging a more environmentally conscious relationship with nature.
The city condenses at each intersection of pedestrian and ferry networks and buildings form on these intersections. Each building is oriented with reference to public amenities of the adjacent site, as well as optimizes natural light and view to the surrounding Bay Area. To enhance the potential for ‘natural’ growth on the site and to increase the efficiency of the building systems, each building adopts an ‘optimal’ configuration, with a minimal footprint on the site.
Through creating different types of natural networks and establishing an adaptable building system, the versatile platforms act as extensions of the marshland, adopting diverse environmental circumstances, such as changing tidal levels and a variety of human activities. In addition, floating kiosks and platforms grow out from the Richmond site and begin to influence the Bay Area on a larger scale.
Conflict Governmental policy vs detrimental Environment The current Korean Government has developed the overall untamed area in Korea since 2008 under the purpose of enhancing the usage of overall territory In Korea. However, most of local protester and Environmentalist contradict this ideas in aspects of intentional destruction of natural ecosystem.
Bridge city Horizontal structures connects neighbor cities in broaden view in order to symmetrical development. This is able to occupy minimum space of the land so that the land can still be conserved by green open space. Each building unit has a different function such as leisure city, transporting city, central city and culture city. Since there are several rivers and rivulets, green areas are suitable for connecting both water system and road system.
Vertical natural spines The project has main vertical spine for nature and horizontal structure for city. The vertical spine adopts a way to respect the original area which supports the nature consist of the axis of absolute line.
Tracing the site condition Project is traced original natural condition to avoid destroying the untamed environment. New city will be plan to minimize negative effect on the natural swamp area.
Condensed city The city will be develop along with the current road system, instead of occupying the whole area evenly. In addition, Through high density city strategy, the less area the city occupies, the more natural area will be protected.
City #1, Leisure, Silver Town The site is located between river and hill, so it is suitable for a silver town.
City #2, Airport, Trade district Trade Storage related to Kimhae international airport would be located and office buildings and service town for airport officers would be suitable in this district.
City #3, Central district The district is centered by commercial town and flood gate, so it could be the main district of transportation ranging from roads to waterway. (Station , Entertainment)
City #4, Convention and Office Since conventions and hotels are necessary for officer, the central district would be the main district not only in the Nakdong site, But also in Busan.
City #5, Cultural district Cultural leisure town related to Mekdo wellbeing park would be beneficial for this district, and waterway from the end of Nackdong river can build main transportation for infra system.
City #6, Distribution in Busan The district connects Busan and harbor directly, So distribution would be suitable in this district.
New development vs Preservation Song-Do, Inchon is one of undeveloped island. Inchon decided to develop the untamed area while they undergo monetary problem. However, environmentalist disagree this argument to preserve the natural tidal area which plays a role in purifying the sea water. a suggested project satisfies both of their interest by providing the new urban area and by maximizing natural sandbank to preserving the natural ecosystem.
Taking advantage of tidal system Site has a great amount of gap on tidal system with over 8 meters. The city uses this natural environment as transformation of city to provide diverse shape of entertainment.
Decentralized city City is divided as minimal functional units, instead of concentrating on one big city center. This strategy provides not only more opportunity to meet the tidal area, but also prevent the natural city from indiscriminate development.
Maximized Edge of City The strategy of preservation begins leaving nature as it is. Different types of prolonged edge system maximize interconnection area with water and enhance intentions of natural dialog between natural tidal and introduced urban islands in order to fulfill the idea.
Tidal system Hydric environment is well suited condition which enables all organism to live in. Inchon city development has strived to the tidal area in other to promoting region economy. In this regard, This plan will meet both demand in aspect of improving natural environment by maximizing the bank area and providing the habitat for human simultaneously.
According to the HUD, United States Department of Housing and Urban Development, the world’s human population had doubled in the year 1800 to 1900 from 1 billion to 2 billion. As of today, the world population has reached 7 billion. This rapid growth in population has reached a critical point and affected significant shortage on proper housing for world population. Less house suggests convergent desire of human being through integrating minimal function of furniture, architectural form, and infrastructure of urban system, instead of separating the role of each ingredients. The synthesis of them will maximize the efficiency of construction and time, minimizing the cost and the harmful impact on the environment.
Self-modifying the unit
The unit can be arranged by each user on the intersection of the infrastructure system. One unit can have four 7’by 7’ enclosed garden which not only can be buffer-zone, but also be expansion of the interior space to the nature.
Plug in to the Infrastructure
Current city infrastructure operates on the Load, and each housings are provided from them. However, Less city’s Function and infrastructure such as water, electricity, and MEP work out on the grid by plugging in to under the base of grid.
The Architecture as a form
The Form of architecture allows inner space to connect to outer space , Less house lead the reciprocal interaction between interior space and exterior space to promotes people’s activity to the outside as the architecture system, instead of the form of traditional architecture which uses wall enclosure to define program spaces. Redefined boundaries ascribe to occupy adjustable space , altering independent space to accessible use by overlapping public area to the semi-private area.
The Furniture as a tool
The furniture of less house serves as functional equipment, dividing the house into operative units. The furniture divided units are able to determine the boundary of house and physical form of the building simultaneously. Since the furniture functions as wall and structure for the house, less house holds smaller area for their home activity than regular house.
The Infrastructure as a structure
The infrastructure operates under the wall of the building, and located on the grid in the site. It also supports the location of furniture that serves as wall and structure in order to provide necessary utility such as water, electricity and gas. As the infrastructure is put on the systematic grid, it can generate the maximum usable space, coupled with improving space efficiency.
The City as a conception
The conception takes maximum effect with the goal to bridge the pragmatic and ideal city. It is human nature to desire more than what one actually needs. Human being demands extravagant space over appropriate one resulting in one of main causes of housing shortage in an overpopulated city. The proposed new prototype of Less house that builds with minimal elements of furniture, architecture, infrastructure and city trigger to address this issue.

Defining size and depth of art work 23 projects have their own size of art work after the workshop process. Each size of works are re-sized as 2 and 3 Dimensional boundary to fit in the display plan.
Optimizing sectional distribution Each cubicles are rearranged base on the characteristic of artwork and the height of perspective of audience. Each works is situated in the place where to be seen optimized view.
Total budget, Material, Construction The project had sponsored installation fee by Korean cultural service. Full-time employed designers has limit time to installation with 3 days. All designer has no construction and fabrication experience. The project should have been considered these limitation.
Modulating structure To dealing with limitation of time and cost, We decided to take advantage of 2X4 basic structural wood fame and modulating the each elements to take advantage of construction cost and time efficiency.
Facile and light surface Fabric surface enables us to reduce a significant amount of time consuming on its fabrication, which can modify by simple scissor. Facile and light surface serves as lessening the overall weight of surface to reduce overall load.
Free standing and Flexibility of installation Each two plates are connected by hinge which facilitate flexibility movement. In addition, fabric molding technic at the edge of surface enhances work efficiency.
Moire effect at a short range Moire effect is considered as negative result in fashion or fabric professional. On the other hand, the surface takes advantage of the effect for audience to represent to bob up and down at short range.
Arrangement with flexibility Pavilion can be modified, based on space configuration. There are no limitation for the arrangement at any place.
TAIPEI PERFORMING ART CENTER
Prolong Event-scape Taipei performing art center serves as an extension of public open space instead of separating the boundary. Multi-purpose theater is able to not only accommodate the colorful festive events of Taipei from night market festival , but also transform to flexible performing area for many different art forms form. In an extensive urban space linking adjacent area of city, new center will become a cultural node to stimulate creativity and interaction among citizens.
Two traditional typology theatres stand aside to let multipurpose theatre space secure to maximize public space. The perimeter basic structure set up to enhance construction efficiency. The canter space is prolonged the event scape from urban fabrication to consolidate between original site context and new theatre’s circulation system. Theatre entrances open to the each direction to accommodate their function as extension of original cultural activity. The creation of urban amphitheater is extended from urban circulation to increase unintentional encounter. The configuration of slab will be able to transform various kind of shape of space : Flexible height, wide, depth and plat form. The Circulation not only supports multiform theatre, but also serves as connection with adjacent theatres. The interaction from the facilities’ circulations makes the new building and urban area active.
Surface Fabrication Outer surface is not stereotypical surface, but Hanging tent structure with light surface structure to reduce overall structural system, instead of using hard structural surface which can be new type of construction approach.
